THE CONVERTIBLES

Exposition September 15, 16 and 17, 2006
Parc des Champs-de-Bataille, at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Welcome on board

The Convertibles is a unique event featuring collective creations presented in 10 Quebec locations and is part of the activities celebrating the 10th anniversary of Journées de la culture.

Inspired by an experiment conducted since 1997 by the Biennale d'art contemporain de Lyon (in French) , the project consisted in the creation of 10 public works of art that brought together professional artists and groups of citizens. Each collective had been given a bus which it had to transform, rebuild, inhabit, or convert – both inside and out.

Eight Quebec municipalities and one region have associated themselves with this initiative as production partners. Artistic, cultural, and educational organizations have also participated in the project as local operators. As for the busses, they have been provided courtesy of local transporters or, in some cases, by municipal transportation corporations.

The finished pieces were presented in a public, festive space – symbolic for each municipality –
during Journées de la culture on September 29 and 30, and October 1, 2006.
